Question 1

How much should I actually prepare for — a weekend, two weeks, or longer?

Accepted Answer

For most households the sweet spot is two weeks of self-sufficiency at home plus a 72-hour go-bag per person for evacuation. Two weeks covers the vast majority of real-world disruptions — storms, prolonged power cuts, supply-chain wobbles, illness — without tipping into bunker territory. Build it gradually: an extra week of food and water this month, a power station next month, a stocked first-aid kit the month after. Smart prep is steady, not panicked.

Question 2

What's the single most useful thing to buy first?

Accepted Answer

A portable power station in the 500–1000 Wh range. It runs lights, phones, a router, a fan or small heater, a CPAP, and most kitchen small appliances for a day or two — covering the most common real-world incident (a power cut) immediately. Pair it with a small folding solar panel later and you've solved the highest-impact preparedness problem with one purchase. Honourable mentions: a quality water filter and a stocked first-aid kit.

Question 3

Can I run a generator or propane heater indoors?

Accepted Answer

No — petrol and propane generators produce carbon monoxide and must always run outside, well away from windows and doors. The same applies to most camp stoves and unvented propane heaters. Indoor-safe options exist: battery power stations (zero emissions), electric space heaters powered from a power station or wall, and catalytic propane heaters specifically rated and certified for indoor use with proper ventilation. When in doubt, keep combustion outside and bring battery power inside. Always install working CO and smoke detectors.

Question 4

How long does long-life food actually last?

Accepted Answer

Properly stored, freeze-dried meals in mylar pouches with oxygen absorbers last 20–30 years. Canned goods last 2–5 years past their printed date if undamaged and stored cool. Vacuum-sealed dry staples (rice, beans, oats) last 5–10 years. The trick is rotation — even long-life food deserves a check-in every 12 months. Store everything in a cool, dark, dry spot, label with the purchase date, and keep an inventory list on your phone so you actually eat and replace as you go.

Question 5

What's the difference between a water filter and a water purifier?

Accepted Answer

A filter removes bacteria, protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium), sediment, and most chemicals — enough for the vast majority of UK, US, EU and Australian freshwater sources. A purifier additionally inactivates viruses, which matters most for international travel or heavily contaminated sources. For everyday home and travel use, a high-quality filter (Sawyer, LifeStraw, Berkey, Katadyn) is plenty. Add chlorine dioxide tablets as a lightweight chemical backup for the worst-case scenario. Always carry one filter per person in any go-bag.

Question 6

Do I really need a 72-hour go-bag if I never plan to evacuate?

Accepted Answer

Yes — and the value goes well beyond evacuation. A pre-packed bag is invaluable for unexpected hospital stays, last-minute trips, helping a relative, sheltering with friends after a flood or fire, and any situation where you need to leave the house in 60 seconds with everything you'd want for three days. Build one per adult: water, two days of food, layers, headlamp, phone charging, basic first aid, copies of key documents, cash, medications. Refresh annually. You'll use it more than you expect.

Question 7

How do I prep on a tight budget?

Accepted Answer

Start with what's free or nearly free. Fill a few empty 2-litre bottles with tap water and store them in a cupboard — that's a week's drinking water for one person. Add an extra tin or two of food to your normal weekly shop. Download offline maps. Charge a power bank. Print key contacts on paper. Then add one larger item per month — a head torch, a basic first-aid kit, a Sawyer Mini filter, a propane camp stove. The biggest preparedness wins are habits and small purchases stacked over time, not one giant order.

Question 8

Where should I store all this gear so it's actually useful?

Accepted Answer

Split it across three zones: everyday-reach (head torch by the bed, first-aid in the kitchen, power bank in your bag), 72-hour go-bag in or near the front door, and bulk reserves (water, long-life food, spare batteries, fuel) somewhere cool and dry like a hallway cupboard, garage, or under a stairwell. Avoid lofts (heat) and sheds (damp). Keep an inventory note on your phone. The fastest gear to find in a real incident is the gear you've already used in everyday life.

Quietly prepped for whatever's next.
